CPH Ranch Sorting Series Rules

1. Abuse of cattle or horses or unnecessary roughness will be cause for disqualification as determined by the judge.

2. Use of foul language while participating in a sorting event will be cause for ejection from the event.

3. For this 2011/2012 Fall Series there is No Ride Limit. However, for the finals only, we will enforce a ride limit of 6 rides per person in each division/class, teams must change all partners.

4. It is the responsibility of the contestant to know how many times he or she is entered in each division and their ranking as well as their partners.

5. Starting number for each team will be drawn when the team is in the arena

6. There will be 10 sorting cattle in the sorting arena marked with visible numbers from 0-9.  The use of unnumbered cattle will be up to producer (example no trash cows or may use up to 2 cows per set)

7. If any numbered cow has a number that is unreadable or missing, then the faulty cows will be replaced or announced to the riders if applicable.

·         It is the riders’ responsibility to notify flagger or arena director before he or she rides on the cattle that a number is unreadable announcer and or judge will notify team if possible of a number rolled up.

·         If team still feels the number that is the herd is unusable he or she may ask for a decision from judge or arena director

8. Cattle will be settled after each run to the satisfaction of the next team.

9. The sorting rider on the approaching team will be designated the "Team Captain". As the "Team Captain" approaches the sorting herd foul line he or she must notify flagging judge of need to settle the cattle

·         If cattle are not settled to team captains satisfaction he/she must ask judge to cross the sorting line to move cattle

·         Then after Team captain is satisfied  they ride back to other side and flag is raised to start sort

·         At that time the starting number will be announced. Time starts when the first rider crosses the foul line.  The number will be announced 2 more times for a total of 3 times.

10. Once committed to the cattle by crossing the foul line, the team is responsible for the cattle.  It is the responsibility of the team, before working the cattle, to pull up and call for an arena director, if, in their opinion, there is an injured or unusable animal in the herd the sorting will stop and that animal will be replaced at the judges discretion. Once the cattle are worked, no excuses are accepted.

·         If sorting is stopped because of unusable (injured) cow that team will start over with new time start.

·         But if sort team is the cause of cow being unable to be used a no time will announced

·         In the event that a cow is replaced, only the affected team and remaining teams will sort on this herd. Previous teams do not get a re-ride.

11. You are to start with the starting number and continue in numerical order. For example, your number is 6, you must first sort out number 6, then 7, 8, 9, 0, 1, etc.

·         Cattle are considered "sorted" when rear of the sorted cow crosses the foul line.

·         If any part of cattle crosses the foul line out of sequence, the team shall be judged "no time".

·         If any cattle already sorted come back across the foul line, the team shall be judged "no time".

·         If any part of an unnumbered cow crosses the foul line prior to the 10th cow being cleanly sorted, the team shall be judged “no time”.

·         Roughing of cattle or horse the team shall be judged "no time"( other words any contact with any cow  is considered roughing )

12. You will continue to sort until all cattle are sorted or until you are out of time.

·         There is a 60-second time limit.

·         Teams will receive a 30 second audible warning.

·         The team shall stop sorting if judged calls a "no time"

13. Teams are judged on the number of cattle sorted, and the time it took to sort them.

·         It is permissible to stop sorting anytime and hold cattle already sorted until the clock runs out.

·         The lap timer will be used to break any ties. The team that sorts the most cows in the shortest  amount of time wins.

·         Teams sorting in all rounds will always place higher than teams sorting in fewer rounds. Ex. If team 1 sorts 10 in the first and 5 in the second and 2 in the short go. They would place higher than team 2 that sorted 10 in the first and 8 in the second and a NT in the short go.

14.   Judges shall be treated with courtesy, cooperation, and respect. No person shall direct abuse or threatening conduct towards a judge.

15.  In the spirit of good sportsmanship, the spotting of cattle from the crowd is permitted.

16.  Settling

Each new herd must be familiarized with both sides before the first team runs on a herd. Cattle will be settled prior to run at judge’s discretion. It is the judge’s responsibility to see that the herds are settled as long as needed. A new herd is one that has not been sorted on at all. This is typically done the night before or morning of the show.

Pot is calculated by # of teams X entry fees- $4.00 per team for finals X 55%

Ex. (40 teams X $40 – 40 teams X $4.00) X 55% = pot

(1600 – 160) X .55 = $792.00

20. Re-rides

If there is a malfunction of the sorting pen, or a numbered cow jumps any fence it will result in a re-ride for that team at the end of the herd.  In the instance of a re-ride the affected team will receive a full 60 seconds of time however their previous time cannot be improved however their head count can be. For example, if a team has sorted 5 head in 50 seconds prior to a cow jumping the fence then they will receive a re-ride. In the re-ride, the same team sorted 10 head in 40 seconds then their official time and score would be 10 head in 50 seconds.

If the announcer calls a duplicate # or a number that has already been sorted then that team will receive an immediate re-ride.

21. Classes of competition

For each class of competition, no team will be allowed to compete at a higher combined rating than the class. For instance, a 7 class will not have two riders with a combined rating of higher than 7. The masters class will not have a handicap however, both riders will have to be 50 or older during 2011 to be eligible.

The youth class will be for riders that are 16 or younger and a rating of 2 or lower.

22. Finals Eligibility

In order to qualify for the finals, each rider must have participated in a minimum of 4 shows in the class that they want to ride in the finals. For example, you must ride in the 3 class in 4 seperate shows to qualify for the finals.
